Step by step
- Use the best copy you have. A WAV, FLAC or high-bitrate MP3 separates more cleanly than a low-quality stream rip: compression artefacts confuse any model.
- Drop it into the box above. Then press Split vocals. Standard quality is the right choice for almost every song.
- Check it by ear. The instrumental is soloed when it finishes. Press B to flip to the original and back, and drag along the waveform to the chorus, where backing vocals are thickest.
- Download the instrumental. As WAV, or MP3 for a smaller file. The vocals are there too if you want the acapella.
Tips for a cleaner instrumental
- Reverb tails on the voice are the most common leftover. In a full song they sit under the band; on a quiet piano ballad you may hear them.
- Backing vocals and choirs are usually removed with the lead, which is what you want for karaoke.
- Vocal-like instruments (a lead synth, a saxophone, a heavily processed vocal chop) can be partly treated as voice.
- Live and mono recordings are harder than modern studio mixes; expect more bleed.
- Noise or hum in a home recording survives into both tracks. Clean the vocals afterwards with the noise remover.
Why the old "vocal remover" trick sounds bad
Older apps and audio editors remove vocals by subtracting the left channel from the right. Anything mixed in the centre cancels out: the voice, but also the kick drum, the snare and the bass, and the result is thin and hollow. A trained separation model listens for what a voice sounds like instead, so the drums and bass stay intact. More on the model, quality settings and speed on the vocal remover page.
More audio and video tools
- Noise remover: take fans, traffic and hum out of a voice recording, or clean up the acapella.
- Auto captions and video to text: lyrics or speech to SRT, VTT or plain text, in your browser.
- Video compressor: make a cover or karaoke video small enough for Discord, WhatsApp or email.
- Text to speech: a natural voice-over to lay over the instrumental, made on your device.
Privacy
Your song is decoded and separated by your browser on this page. It is not uploaded, stored or seen by anyone. The page downloads the model and the ONNX Runtime engine (about 20 MB compressed) from this site once and keeps them in your browser's cache.
Questions
Can you remove vocals from a song completely?
Very nearly, with a modern separation model. Lead vocals usually disappear; what can remain are faint reverb or echo tails, and backing vocals that are mixed tightly with instruments. Old tricks like phase cancellation remove anything panned to the centre, including bass and drums, and leave side-panned vocals behind.
How do I remove vocals from a song for free?
Drop the song into the tool on this page and press Split vocals. It runs in your browser with no account or watermark, and you download the instrumental as WAV or MP3.
How do I remove vocals on my phone?
Open this page in Chrome on Android or Safari on iPhone, tap the box to pick a song from your files, and press Split vocals. Phones take longer than laptops; keep the screen on and the page open until it finishes.
Will removing vocals lower the sound quality?
The instrumental keeps your song's 44.1 kHz sample rate and stereo image, and WAV adds no further loss.
Can I remove vocals from a video?
Yes. Drop the video (MP4, WebM or MOV); the tool separates its audio track and you download the instrumental and vocals as WAV or MP3.
Can I use the separated tracks commercially?
The tool puts no restrictions on what you make, but the song itself still belongs to its rights holders. Removing the vocals does not change the copyright: get permission before you publish or sell anything made from someone else's song.
