Compress a video for Discord

Under 20 MB for free accounts, 50 MB with Nitro Basic, 500 MB with Nitro. Plays inline in the chat. Nothing is uploaded until you post it.

How it works

  1. Drop your video. MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV, any length. Clips from OBS, ShadowPlay, an iPhone or a phone recorder all work.
  2. Pick where it's going. The tool works out the bitrate from the length and the limit, keeps room for the sound, and picks a resolution and frame rate that will still look clean. The estimated size and a real before-and-after frame update as you change things.
  3. Trim if you like, or set the resolution and frame rate yourself.
  4. Compress. When the encode finishes, the tool weighs the file. If it came out over the limit, it encodes again at a lower bitrate, so the file you download is always under the target, to the byte.

Discord raised the free limit from 10 MB to 20 MB on 13 August 2026. If someone's app or a server bot still rejects your file, use the 10 MB preset; it fits under both. Nitro Basic users pick Nitro Basic for 50 MB. Server boosts can raise the limit for that server only.

Tips for gaming clips

Fast games at 60 fps eat bitrate. At small sizes the tool halves the frame rate before it lowers the resolution, because a sharp 30 fps clip usually looks better than a blurry 60 fps one. If motion matters more than detail, set 60 fps yourself and let the resolution drop. Trimming the dead seconds at the start and end is the cheapest quality boost there is.

3 minutes360p540p720p
10 minutes240p240p480p

What the automatic setting picks for a 4K, 30 fps video with sound (smaller sources stay at their own size). Fast-moving footage looks softer at the same size; you can always override it.

Questions

What is Discord's file size limit?

As of November 2026: 20 MB per file on a free account, 50 MB with Nitro Basic and 500 MB with Nitro. The free limit was 10 MB until 13 August 2026.

How do I send a video over 10 MB or 20 MB on Discord?

Compress it to just under the limit here, then drag the MP4 into Discord. It plays inline. Or trim it, since a shorter clip gets more bitrate per second.

Will Discord embed the video?

Yes. MP4 with H.264 and AAC plays inline on desktop, web, iPhone and Android.

Is my video uploaded?

No. Your browser reads the file from your disk and encodes it on your own device with WebCodecs. Nothing is sent to a server, so it also works on large private files.

Why does it say the file is guaranteed to be under the limit?

After encoding, the tool measures the real file. Video encoders can overshoot a bitrate by a few percent, so if the file is over the target the tool encodes again at a lower bitrate. It only offers the download once the byte count is under the target, and it shows both numbers.

Which browsers work?

Any browser with WebCodecs video encoding: recent Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari on a computer, and Chrome on Android. If yours can't, the tool says so instead of failing halfway. If your browser can encode VP9 but not H.264 with AAC, you get a WebM file and a note saying so.
